Why is it important to maintain the human-animal bond?

As veterinary professionals, one of our roles is to help maximise the potential of the ‘human-animal bond’ — a mutually beneficial relationship between people and animals. This can be the most wonderful bond built on a foundation of trust, love, and companionship.

The incredible thing is, animals are not bound to societal norms and they do not pass judgment on the humans they are with. They give unconditional love >> and they won’t stop giving it to us once we let them into our hearts 💕. Nothing compares to the joy of coming home to a loyal companion and that warm feeling of mutual affection.
Pets have evolved to become acutely attuned to our behaviour and emotions — easing loneliness and encouraging movement and playfulness. They add structure and a sense of self-worth and purpose to our day. Pets are the best!

A study published in BMC Psychiatry found that 74% of pet owners reported mental health improvements from pet ownership, citing companionship and comfort as key benefits. 84% of these owners considered their pets a major source of emotional support ♥️

As RVNs, we are uniquely positioned to assess pet’s needs, not only in veterinary practice, but more accurately in their home environment. This allows us to observe their behaviour in a setting where they are most comfortable, leading to more tailored and effective care recommendations. By identifying subtle changes in a pet’s demeanour or routine, we can offer specific guidance that enhances the overall well-being of the pet; nurturing bonds that will become strong and enduring. Vet Nurses can educate on best practices in pet care, helping caregivers to understand their pet’s needs better. This shared knowledge not only enhances confidence but also strengthens the emotional connection between the owner/caregiver and their pet.

The ‘human-animal bond’ has been significant throughout human history and must be protected. It enriches lives, fosters empathy, and encourages a greater understanding of our place in the natural world.

Despite all the benefits, it’s important to remember that caring for a pet is a major commitment that will last through the animals lifetime, and not a miracle cure for complex health issues.
